Position Summary

Reporting to: CEO
Division: Environmental

A Chief Estimator is responsible for the following duties:

  • Manage a team of Estimators.
  • Develop and implement all department standards and procedures and will have final review of all estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to final review with Division Lead.
  • Generates project leads through business development, effective marketing, and review of publications.
  • Assists in determining project bidding viability through a review of drawings/specifications, evaluation of competition and consideration of schedule.
  • Working closely with the Project Management Team.

Responsibilities

Compiling estimates of how much it will cost to provide a client or potential client with products or services.

  • Accountable for discharge of all estimating related responsibilities.
  • Oversee all estimates, including detailed review of others’ work.
  • Attending pre-tender meetings, site meetings to prepare precise estimate.
  • Lead the overall preconstruction process including bidding, proposals, cost estimates, and budget analysis.
  • Review estimate assignments to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to formal submission.
  • Support the business development process.
  • Propose and approve project risk and cost mitigation as well as the potential for project opportunities and cost savings.
  • Lead external and internal presentations of proposals and estimates.
  • Identify project-specific prices related to key items including labour, equipment, and materials.
  • Build effective relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders (operations staff) that reflect and support A2 Environmental’s core values and A2 Environmental’s brand image.
  • Accurately interpret technical specifications for bid documents.
  • Review project business plans with external clients and internal stakeholders to ensure profitability.
  • Actively assist with full quantity take-offs to ensure accuracy of contract specifications and pricing.
  • Keep pricing requirements top-of-mind to ensure feasibility.
  • Grow and maintain strong relationships with trade partners, consultants, and clients to achieve the project goals and vision.
  • Provide innovative solutions and opportunities and look beyond plans and specifications.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate from both a secondary and a post-secondary institution.
  • Graduate from a university program related to civil engineering or college diploma in construction technology.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years industry related experience.
  • A proven track record of estimate / bid management as well as team collaboration and management.
  • Successful experience in leading Level 3+ projects and managing and mentoring of a small team.
  • Outstanding leadership and organizational skills with the ability to effectively influence others and successfully resolve a variety of client, project, and technical issues to bring the project to successful completion.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex problems and to plan and lead multidisciplinary teams to execute environmental services.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, standards, and guidelines related to environmental services.
  • Knowledge of the engineering design, tender, and construction management processes and related contractual conditions for a variety of environmental services technologies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Previous experience with Planswift and/or B2W, considered an asset.

Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of controls, estimating and engineering
  • Proficient use of computers and programs
  • An understanding of how to resolve issues related to labour costs, material costs and time requirements
  • Professionally reports research results
  • Adept in mathematics

Abilities:

  • An ability to handle a wide range in project budgets and tenders
  • An Ability to produces accurate, timely and error-free estimates based on site investigation
  • Effective communication skills both oral and written
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications
  • Good analyzing skills

Work Environment

Work is primarily in an office environment but requires frequent travel to work sites to monitor the progress of work and to meet with Site Superintendents and/or Clients.
